“The city of Seville and its civil guard are ready. No form of aggressive behaviour will be tolerated”

A few words about BBC Reporting Scotland this evening…

Well, wasn’t that a lovely green dress that Laura Miller was wearing on BBC Reporting Scotland this evening? Yes, it really suited you, Laura! I think we know who you are Laura. Someone told me that your husband once played for Celtic (along with a few other teams). Is that right? Or is that another chap called Miller?

And what was the main item tonight? Cost of Living crisis? Covid? War in Ukraine? Murders? Drug Taking? The A9 needing repairs? Climate chnage? No, nothing like that – just a few Scottish people (well some of them sounded English and there was a chap from Australia) setting off from Glasgow Airport, and some of them going on a bus journey which was going to take 28 hours.

A couple of them were clearly Dundee United supporters, because they were wearing Tangerine shirts. We saw huge sombreros, funny spectacles and cheery, happy responsible people, and just in case we had the slightest doubt that they were all comfortable middle class people, we even had Murdo Fraser of the Scottish Conservatives telling us that it was 50 years since Rangers had won a European trophy and failing to work it into the conversation that a bigger, better trophy – the real European Cup in fact – had been won by a Scottish club some five years before that.

And no-one mentioned anything about who had won the Scottish League this year.

Clearly the acceptable side of Scotland. No flares, no bottles of Buckfast or cheap wine, no knuckle draggers, no ladies with red white and blue mascara, no raucous behaviour, no offensive songs or chants. And fancy us worrying about anyone going on the rampage to vandalise cathedrals! Or picking fights with the Germans? That nice Messrs Souness, Gough and Durrant delivered pleas begging them to behave and stern warning as well.

But no, there is no need to worry – unless, of course, someone asks who won the League! Again! Ten times out of eleven!
