The James Forrest wildcard that Giakoumakis’ absence could tempt Postecoglou into playing

James Forrest was pictured heavily in the training video from Lennoxtown yesterday. The 30-year-old missed the wins over Rangers at Ibrox as well as the 7-0 thrashing of St Johnstone with a minor knock but he will be looking to make an impact in what has been a frustrating season for the winger.

As one of Celtic’s most decorated players, Forrest will be keen to add to his collection of medals; however, he will be acutely aware of the fact that he is in a precarious position at the club. A season that has thus far been defined by injuries means that he may struggle to command the game time that he was used to previously. With that said, Giakoumakis’ injury may mean that Ange Postecoglou is tempted to play him at Hampden.

You would imagine that Giakoumakis’ absence means that Daizen Maeda plays through the middle which would allow Jota to take his natural place at LW. That leaves RW outstanding. Whilst Liel Abada would be the natural choice to come in, the fact that Forrest is available could tempt the manager given his work rate in defence is better than his Israeli colleague.

Forrest scored the only goal in the League Cup Semi Final win over St Johnstone back in November. Postecoglou may feel shortchanged with Forrest given that he has been plagued by injuries throughout this season; however, he will happily utilise Forrest if it means sealing a place in the Final against either Hearts or Hibs.
