Celtic can’t assume that the title is won until it is mathematically impossible to be caught. And let’s remember that theRangers know all about through their own bitter experience this year that a six point lead at the top of the table can be overturned. But while lightning might actually strike twice it has to be said that even in weird and wonderful world of Scottish football that’s extremely unlikely.
The Scottish Cup will be won by either Hearts or theRangers this season. The Tynecastle club will be looking to lift the trophy for the ninth time in their history whereas for the Ibrox outfit it would be the first time they have ever won a cup outside of their Petrofac Cup triumph, the state of this can be marvelled at below…
The League Cup is already safely restored to the trophy cabinet at Celtic Park and the destination of the Scottish Premiership is in Celtic’s hand only. It’s not won but the 2016 Petrofac Cup winners do not have it in their own hands. They need snookers and all the bluster they can muster doesn’t hide that harsh reality.
Celtic just need to get the job done, starting at Dingwall on Sunday. And Chris Sutton on BBC Five Live provided an accurate summary of the situation Celtic find ourselves in going into the post split fixtures on the top of the league, looking down on theRangers.
It is a difficult one. I never thought it was over regardless. Celtic six points clear with a superior goal difference but I think they are so evenly matched and of course (the)Rangers have to go to Celtic Park in a couple of weeks.
“They could beat Celtic and it is down to three. Celtic’s trip to Ross County next up. Not a great pitch. I thought Celtic missed Giakoumakis and his physical presence. They couldn’t get up the pitch. I think (the)Rangers played on that. I don’t know how long he is out for. I think that is a big deal Celtic getting him back. But the next game is so important. I still think there is a title race on.
“One thing I am totally sure of is the Celtic players and manager know there is a title race still on. They have worked their way into an incredible position. We’ve talked about it many times on the Monday Night Club. 25 point gap last season. They are so close. It’s about getting over the line but the pressure is on,” Sutton stated.
The pressure just moves around when it comes to the Glasgow Derby and it can work to your advantage as we witnessed on Sunday at Hampden. “Celtic had beaten them twice when Van Bronckhrost was in charge so there was a lot of pressure on him going into the game,” Sutton noted.
