‘The transfer of Giakoumakis to Celtic is completed,” according to Greek Media Report

“The transfer of Giakoumakis to Celtic is completed,” Greek news site gazzetta.gr has confirmed.

Georgios Giakomakis appears to be heading to Celtic after the club agreed a fee for the Greek International striker with relegated Dutch side VVV Venlo. The player, who incredibly scored 26 league goals in 30 Eredivisie games last season, had an option to move to Germany to play for Werder Bremen but Celtic – and the chance to work alongside Ange Postecoglou – has been his preferred option.

VVV Venlo bosses gave the striker permission to speak to interested clubs and he spent yesterday with his agent in Germany look at what was on offer at Werder Bremen, who also found themselves dropping down a division at the end of last season. However no agreement was reached between the clubs with only Celtic meeting the Dutch minnows asking price of around £2.1m, which also includes sell-on clause.

So all that is now required is for Dom McKay to reach an agreement with the 26 year old international striker on his own personal terms, and that appears to be fairly straightforward if reports on what Giakoumakis is looking for are accurate. The sums requested fall well within Celtic’s structure for a player Postecoglou has personally spoken to about joining him at Paradise.

Giakoumakis will also be well aware of the the quality of AZ Alkmaar from his time in Dutch football and will have been impressed with Celtic’s 2-0 win last night in the first leg of the Europa League Play-off.

Yesterday we told you to expect three signings stating that Scales, Juranovic and Giakoumakis were the likely arrivals and noting that the two defenders were going to happen with the striker perhaps dependent on the imminent transfer of Odsonne Edouard going through.
