Celtic B overcame Simon Ferry’s Open Goal Broomhill FC thanks in large part to the goalscoring exploits of Joey Dawson. The English striker, who joined Celtic from Scunthorpe United in 2021, has now bagged three braces in as many Lowland League games.
Dawson is a versatile player, who can play as a midfielder or a striker. He signed a three year contract with the Hoops in June 2021 and made his first team debut against St Johnstone on Boxing Day that year, when the team was severely depleted with injuries. He gave a good account of himself but has yet to feature again. Instead, he returned to the B squad, where he has been in impressive form.
The 19 year old’s recent scoring spate came against Rangers B (5-2 victory in front of a bumper crowd at Paradise), Civil Service Strollers (4-0 victory), and then Open Goal Broomhill (3-0 victory). Dawson has now notched up no fewer than 11 goals in 12 Lowland League appearances this term, also adding two assists. With form like that, he could be in line for a place on the bench in the first team squad, able to be deployed as a third choice striker – particularly if Giakoumakis departs the club.
There has been interest in the player from the English Championship too. It looks like Joey has a bright future, but his feet will be kept firmly on the ground by a wonderful footballing family. Indeed, Joey’s uncle is none other than former Tottenham Hotspur and England defender Michael Dawson, while his father (Andy Dawson) was a footballer himself and is currently a first team coach at Hull City.
It would be great to see some of the youngsters get a chance after performing so well in the reserve side. Rocco Vata has already been handed a first team opportunity in recent weeks and the likes of Joey Dawson, Dane Murray etc will be hungry to have a taste of it again.

In fairness to Doak he has gone to Liverpool and already played in a few games for them. So I think his scenario is different as he is actually able to feature for their first team, at a club which is able to compete to win the Champions League. In most cases players do just go to rich clubs to sit in the reserves and disappear though
