This was, frankly, a cataclysmic disappointment. A 6-0 tanking would have been easier to take than this. At least four gilt-edged chances were presented and spurned in the second half, and this is just unsustainable.

It is now likely that that two E’s Edouard and Elyounoussi will never wear a green and white jersey again. Frankly, on today’s performance, I have to say that they are simply not Celtic class. Was it only two years ago that Edouard was the hero of the hour scoring these goals against Hearts in the rain in the 2019 Scottish Cup final? Today he did not even seem interested, his body language radiating “We are beat before we start”.

But even more heart-breaking for us all was the apparent acceptance of it all, with so many players now heading for the exit. Johnjoe Kenny decided to have one of his poorer games, Diego Laxalt was rightly taken off at half time (I wouldn’t even have kept him on for as long as that!) and those who wish the departure of Ryan Christie will now probably get their desire. Callum McGregor and Stephen Welsh have had better days, and the only people who deserve pass marks were Scott Brown, Scott Bain, Kristoffer Ajer and David Turnbull.

There is not really an awful lot of point in dwelling on this game. Like the rest of this awful season, it has gone, and we must all take it on the chin and resolve to fight back. Sadly, the excellent John Kennedy did not do his chances of landing the main job a great deal of good.

Leigh Griffiths, another chap who will probably not be with us next season, should have been on at half time. Granted, no-one knew just what a shocker Edouard was going to have in the second half, but the Frenchman simply did not look interested. He has had a poor season, and has coped with the pandemic a lot worse than most, and it really is in everyone’s interest that the earnest youngster should go. He has had his great moments in a Celtic jersey, and he should be proud of them, but the time has really now come.

So time is now of the essence, and there will really be no excuse for an appointment not being made early this week. I sometimes feel that Eddie Howe’s moment has come and gone – it has gone on too long – and maybe Roy Keane may, after all, not be all that bad an idea.

Yes, I know what he is like, but he is a Celtic lover and will be as big a name as Steven Gerrard is for Rangers. He will certainly also be able to cope with the immense pressures of the job in the way that Neil Lennon clearly couldn’t. I fear that Eddie Howe may be too nice a man for Glasgow next season. Above all else, we must have someone who is not going to tolerate theRangers being on top. John Kennedy I would like to see as Assistant, but for a new Manager we really now must go big. It is a situation that cannot be tolerated.

And yes, there must be a clear out of players – and it must start to happen soon. The taxis are waiting for Edouard, Elyounoussi and a few more. It is a shame, but we have been let down. On the credit side, both Scotland and England hotch with players who want to play for Celtic. And I would start with Kieran Tierney.
