Time for that Matt O’Riley contract extension, Mr Nicholson

Matt’s the Bhoy. Time for a contract extension Mr Nicholson…

Matt O’Riley continued his brilliant start to the season yesterday at Livingston as he netted our crucial second goal and his fourth of the season. Brendan Rodgers has stated he wants the midfielder to get on the scoresheet more and he’s clearly taken his manager’s instructions on board as he’s delivering in front of goal on a regular basis now, in contract to last season when it was after Christmas before he broke his duck.

Indeed O’Riley’s strike against Livingston yesterday on David Martindale’s Magic Carpet, saw the Danish u21 international beat his tally from last season after just six games! Matt is clearly a Bhoy on top form.

Of course he has always been a great player for Celtic, his 12 assists were the most in the Scottish Premiership last season, and that was him apparently having a slightly below par campaign by his own high standards.

He was clearly missing goals from his game, but he’s now started to add that and he looks the complete player in a Celtic shirt and that’s the way the club should ensure it remains

Kudos to Brendan Rodgers for getting the best out of O’Riley, and you certainly expect that there is still much more to come from the bargain buy – just £1.5million was paid to MK Dons for his services. That’s why it’s imperative we get him tied down on a new deal. Leeds United were correctly but politely told  to do one after putting in a derisory offer for Matt just before the end of the transfer window and there was also interest from Italy.

This Bhoy has got real top quality talent and can go as high as he wants in the game, he’s almost certainly going to break into the Denmark team shortly. And it won’t be long until clubs bigger than Leeds United come sniffing around and offer Celtic money that they will find hard to resist. Everyone has their price in football, that’s just the way it is.

So we should enjoy watching Matt O’Riley while he’s still here and it makes perfect sense for Michael Nicholson to get him signed up on a new and improved deal as he has done with the likes of Kyogo, Daizen Maeda and Liel Abada and is currently trying to do with Reo Hatate. Let’s hope that Matt O’Riley is next of Michael Nicholson’s ‘To Do’ list. It makes perfect sense to get Matt signed up on a longer term contract on improved terms to reward the Bhoy for his contribution up to now and going forward playing in a Celtic shirt.
