To Russia with Love – Celtic to Terminate Oliver Abildgaard Loan Deal

Oliver Abildgaard’s time at Celtic is coming to a close after the Danish international midfielder failed to make an impact at the Scottish Champions. Reports in Russia today claim that Celtic are close to reaching an agreement with Rubin Kazan to terminate the season-long loan deal early and this will see the player leave Celtic in the January transfer window.

Abildgaard will NOT however be heading back to Russia to play for Rubin Kazan who are instead looking at securing another loan deal, perhaps back in his homeland in Denmark for the 26 year old defensive midfielder.

Oliver Abildgaard never managed a start at Celtic as Ange Postecoglou opted to keep the player in reserve, with all of his appearances coming from the bench, usually late in the game. He did replace Callum McGregor in the Champions League in Leipzig when the Celtic captain was forced off through injury and the Dane also got some game time in the 5-1 defeat against European Champions Real Madrid in the Bernabeu at the start of November in the final group stage match in the Champions League.

Abildgaard has not been included in the Celtic list of substitutes since play resumed after the break for the World Cup and it now looks like his time at the Hoops is coming to a close.

Abildgaard was a hit at Rubin Kazan, making 62 appearances for the Russian outfit, after his move there from Aalborg in 2020. However the war in Ukraine has changed the face of Russian football and it is unlikely, to say the least, that the player will go back to his parent club, while the prevailing political conditions exist.

At Celtic it’s just never happened for the player and if there’s unlikely to be any game-time then it’s best for all parties to terminate the agreement and for Celtic to wish Oliver Abildgaard all the best for his career elsewhere.
