Today we celebrate another flag day at Paradise, but it’s frustrating that we start this season weaker than last…
Today thankfully sees the start of the football as we take on Kilmarnock at Celtic Park. We will rightly celebrate as the legend that is Jim Craig raises that flag to signal our third title in a row and our 12th in the last 13 years.
But amongst all the celebrations it still has to be remembered that we start this season weaker than we ended the last, and that is frankly unacceptable.
Kasper Schmeichel has came in to replace Joe Hart, and Viljami Sinisalo has been signed as a backup as Ben Siegrist has also departed. Paulo Bernardo has also signed on a permanent deal, but that’s our whack, and with the transfer window having been open for several weeks now, that’s not good enough.
The Adam Idah saga has illustrated how frustrating our club is when it comes to player recruitment. It now looks as if a deal for the Irish international is dead in the water, and the decision to sell Oh means we start the season with Kyogo as our only recognised striker.
That is untenable. Don’t we have any back up plans in regard to bringing someone else in? It won’t help that we don’t have a head of recruitment in place, which is another example of our boardroom incompetence. But surely Brendan has his own targets in mind? And why is he not being allowed to purse them? He certainly has been vocal in making his points on the need to improve and bring in the signings that he believes will help Celtic compete in Europe.

Yesterday Hearts and theRangers played out a goalless draw at Tynecastle and the Celtic board will have seen nothing there that would make them think that they have to part with money in the transfer market. That might be correct for domestic football but clearly it is blatantly obvious that this Celtic squad is not strong enough to compete in Europe. Do they actually care about that as long as they sell 60,000 packages for the four matches at Celtic Park?
Getting hit for six in away Champions League matches will be quickly forgotten after a few days and the cash can be counted.
We have a good squad, one that will be favourites for the title, they are proven winners after all in domestic football, but every good squad needs reinforcements to prosper and the fact we haven’t even done that with the new season now kicking off is down to mismanagement from our clubs hierarchy.
Brendan Rodgers proved his doubters wrong last season and reminded everyone that his is an elite coach. Listen to the manager and give him what he has asked for, which is far from being unreasonable, and then see where he can take us.
