Transfer Confirmed – Lanus announce Bernabei to Celtic deal

Lanus have taken to their club website to confirm the transfer of left back and Argentine under-19 international Alexandro Bernabei to Celtic has been completed.

Bernabei, it appears will have a 10% sell on clause attached to the deal meaning his former club will get a share of any future transfer, yet the details of the fee paid by Celtic has not so far been disclosed.

“Through this, we communicate the transfer of Alexandro Bernabei to Celtic Football Club, from Scotland; 10 per cent of the player’s file will continue to be held by Club Atlético Lanús.

“With our shirt, Bernabei has added 88 official matches and five goals, becoming part of the youth categories of the Argentine National Team.

“To Berna, one of the many talents of the garnet quarry, we wish him the best of success in his next professional challenge.”

Bernabei will become the first Argentinian to sign for Celtic and could reasonably be argued to be Celtic’s first new top team signing of the transfer window, as the player will be expected not just to be a back-up or cover option for Greg Taylor in the upcoming season but a genuine challenger for the position – and certainly one capable of rotating with Taylor, who impressed greatly under Ange Postecoglou in last season’s title winning campaign from the outset.

Celtic have already confirmed the signings of Daizen Maeda after his loan spell from Yokohama Marinos with an obligation to buy attached became a permanent arrangement, and have also secured the services of Cameron Carter-Vickers from Spurs following a successful loan spell from the North London with a fee reported to be for £6m up front rising to as much as £10m depending on certain targets being reached.

Meanwhile Benjamin Siegrist signed on a free transfer after his contract expired with Dundee United and will replace Vasilis Barkas as a back-up goalkeeping option to Joe Hart and Scott Bain after the Greek club record signing for a goalkeeper completed at 12-month loan move to Dutch side Utrecht.

Celtic have yet to confirm Bernabei as a confirmed transfer, but Lanus’ 3am reveal will likely now lead to the transfer being confirmed by an official club announcement.

It had been believed Celtic perhaps delaying the official confirmation of the deal until Bernabei’s two match suspension, picked up after receiving a red card in his final game with Lanus, could be concluded in Argentina, so we’ll need to see how that one plays out with the SFA as to whether any remaining games of the ban will transfer from Argentina to Scotland.

Celtic head to Austria for a training camp on Monday and it appears an exciting new signing will be on that flight out of Glasgow as Celtic get set to prepare for a defence of the Scottish Premiership title and the tantalising prospect of Champions’ League Group stage football.
