Transfer Latest – Aberdeen confirm Adam Montgomery loan signing

Adam Montgomery has completed his loan move to Aberdeen, with Dons manager Stephen Glass confirming the 19 year old has signed up for the rest of the season.

Glass has pointed to Montgomery’s versatility as well as pointing to Aberdeen’s previous loan success when the Dons took Ryan Christie on loan, as reported on the official Aberdeen website.

“We’re pleased Adam has opted to join us at Pittodrie for the rest of the season.

“His arrival will provide some added flexibility to the squad as he can play in a number of positions.

“He is a player with great potential and someone who we feel will add value to the squad for the second half of the campaign.

“The club has previously enjoyed success with the loan of Ryan Christie from Celtic and we’re confident this move will be as successful.”

Montgomery is very highly rated at Celtic and had made 18 appearances so far this season, performing at both a domestic level and in European competition, however Ange Postecoglou was been keen to get the player out on loan with the opportunity to play every week, something he’s had less opportunity to do in recent weeks with Celtic.

Initially Derek McInnes and Championship side Kilmarnock looked to be favourites to sign Montgomery, however McInnes would have had to offload players from his bloated squad to allow the deal to go ahead, whereby Aberdeen boss Stephen Glass had more room for manoeuvre with Ryan Hedges, Niall McGinn and Austin Samuels all having moved away from Pittodrie in this transfer window.

This particular deal makes a lot of sense for all parties concerned, and for Montgomery his position in the team will be far from a given with Jack MacKenzie a highly rated prospect for Aberdeen. As such some real competition for a starting slot will ensure Adam Montgomery also has to be at his best to secure a starting spot in Stephen Glass’ team for the remainder of the season.

If this loan deal with Aberdeen works out as well as Ryan Christie’s move to the North East both parties will be delighted, as Aberdeen will get a good prospect and for Celtic Adam Montgomery will be ready to challenge for a first team place when he returns to Celtic in the summer.
