Transfer Latest – Mohammad Abu Fani pushing for move from Maccabi Haifa

As the opening of the summer transfer window is now nearly upon us, transfer stories are emerging on the daily involving our beloved Hoops. Tonight beleaguered goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas has departed the club and will move out on-loan which you can read here on The Celtic Star.

As well as outgoings, fans will be eager to get the edge on incomings to the club as Ange sets about phase two of his miraculous rebuild. A few days ago news broke that Celtic were interested in Israeli midfielder Mohammad Abu Fani who plays for Maccabi Haifa in his homeland. As was reported on The Celtic Star on 2 June by Niall J, Ange has been keen to get a closer look at the combative midfielder and sent a scout to the UEFA Nations League match between Israel and Iceland last mid-week to run the rule over him.

The 24-year-old has considerable experience of top level football and has turned out for his country in the double figures. With Celtic in the market this close season for a defensive midfielder as move for Abu Fani would make perfect sense, considering his price-tag which sits at just £800,000 – with his potential for improvement very high. A win-win it would seem for the Celtic heirarchy if snared.

A report from the Daily Record has now claimed that his agent Dudu Dahan – whom Celtic know very well – has been in dialogue with the club regarding the young central midfielder’s future. It is claimed that a publication called ONE in his native Israel has run with the story that Fani will be allowed to leave Haifa for the sum previously mentioned in the article and would not attempt to stand in his way if suitors are keen enough to meet their demands.

The player and his agent both want him to move to a European league in the coming months, however if Celtic are to add Dahan’s client to the roster and reunite him with his international teammate and Celtic goal machine, Liel Abada, they will have to stave off interest from Belgian sides Royal Antwerp and Standard Liege.

It seems the rumour mill is spinning faster with each passing day…

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
