Transfer update as reports indicate £9.5m duo set for January exits

Albian Ajeti and Vasilis Barkas are reportedly being considered for January moves. The duo arrived for a combined £9.5m but have failed to make an impact since arriving at Paradise.

According to Blick, the Swiss attacker is being linked with a return to FC Basel should Arthur Carbal depart this window. The Celtic striker signed from West Ham United in the summer of 2020 but has scored just 9 times in 48 appearances since arriving from the Premier League side.

The signing of Daizen Maeda will relegate Ajeti to fourth choice striker at the club, being Maeda, his compatriot Kyogo and Giorgos Giakoumakis. A move appears to be inevitable now that the manager has brought in another striker. Johnny Kenny was also signed as another attacking option, competing with Ajeti for minutes.

Now, Swedish media outlet Sports Room is claiming that Barkas could leave Celtic this month in a loan deal. The 27-year-old has made just two starts all season with Joe Hart comfortably settled as Celtic’s first choice between the sticks. He was linked with a move to Sheffield United but financials meant that the deal broke down.

The Celtic goalkeeper was ousted from the team on multiple occasions last season since joining from AEK Athens in a £5m deal last summer. However, under Neil Lennon it was clear that he had failed to settle and as a result struggled behind a makeshift defence, resulting in the Greek goalie being made a scapegoat for the poor results.
