Will it? Won’t it?
Who knows at this point – but recent reports claiming that Celtic have agreed a fee for VVV Venlo striker Georgios Giakoumakis are wide of the mark, according to the Scottish Sun.
The striker scored 26 goals in 30 Eredivisie games last season, finishing as the league’s top scorer, ahead of the likes of Donyell Malen – who recently moved to Borussia Dortmund from PSV for £27million – and AZ Alkmaar’s recently departed striker Myron Boadu, who was swayed by the swazzy lights of Monaco for £15m.
Evidently, the side from Alkmaar could have done with Boadu last night as they perished to a 2-0 loss at Paradise last night; and having scored against them last season, they are a side Giorgios knows well.
It is no coincidence that his injuries cost VVV Venlo a place in the Eredivisie last season; having missed five of their final 15 games, VVV went on a run of just one point from a possible 45 as they were relegated to the Eerste Divisie. And with a clause that allows him to leave following their demotion, it appears Giorgios has chosen Celtic.
However, despite rumours of a fee being agreed, the Scottish Sun believe this isn’t the case – even though Ange Postecoglou has been holding talks with the striker, Dom McKay has yet to agree a fee with officials of the Dutch club.
It would represent a fifth striker being moved into the club, given that Kyogo Furuhashi, Odsonne Edouard, Albian Ajeti and Leigh Griffiths currently occupy those spots. However, with Edouard reportedly on his way out of Celtic Park and Griffiths’ future unknown, it would be assumed that the pair would be the casualties of the arrival of Greek goalscorer Giorgios.
