UEFA Guidance Adhered to as Eredivisie Prepares to Return as Scotland Awaits News

Last week Ajax called for the Dutch league (the Eredivisie) to be declared final and to follow the lead of Belgium during these uncertain times. They are top of the league and want to see their side win their 35th Eredivisie title.

However, following UEFA’s call to governing bodies to effectively ‘wait and see’ before calling the league standings final, the Dutch authorities have detailed a plan to return by the end of June. Albeit, behind closed doors should the Government give the go-ahead.

Ajax are top but only on goal difference with AZ Alkmaar in second and PSV in third place just six points behind the league leaders with nine games remaining.

Both AZ and PSV would have been rightfully disgruntled should the legendary Marc Overmars, Ajax’s Technical Director, been successful in his plea to declare the league standings final at this stage.

It will be interesting to see if this decision will play any part in the meeting to decide what will happen to football in Scotland. Will the decision be to follow the Dutch example and adhere to the UEFA guidelines or call their bluff and follow the Belgians?

Today, the Scottish football authorities and representatives from each team will meet to decide the fate of the 2019/20 season. Unlike AZ or PSV, Rangers are 13 points behind Celtic with Steven Gerrard’s team having played a game less. The chances of catching Celtic are slim but both clubs want the league to be played to its 38 game conclusion.

Although other teams may vote against this and push towards awarding Celtic the title in a bid to safeguard their finances ahead of the next year.

Celtic would be both the winners and the losers in this scenario, robbed of a chance to win the league on the park and celebrate with their supporters yet a record-equalling 9IAR would be achieved.

Ideally, the clubs will let the season be concluded on the park at the end of the summer with any luck. Although smaller clubs will need to be safeguarded in order to allow them to get onboard this decision.
