Vasilis Barkas latest as “PAOK and a club from Italy” show interest in £4.5m Celtic keeper

An update from Greek journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos on the Barkas exit developments from Celtic, after the arrival of Joe Hart as Ange Postecoglou’s first choice goalkeeper following the former England No.1’s £1m move to Celtic from Tottenham.

“PAOK and a club from Italy are interested in Barkas. Barkas priority is not to come back in Greek Super League and play abroad. But… you never know. Celtic demand a loan fee plus an option to buy,” the Editor in Chief at Sportime newspaper and Sportime.gr reports.

Celtic clearly want the £4.5m misfit keeper off the books as soon as possible after a consistently dreadful stint as a Celtic goalkeeper. Postecoglou attempted to give the his Greek compatriot a chance, with all players given a clean slate from last season by the New Celtic manager but after waiting both Barkas and Bain quickly decided that he needed a top quality, reliable keeper.

Bain is an adequate back-up keeper and he is apparently happy with that role at the club. Barkas therefore is a hugely expensive error of judgement from the club last summer – whatever were they thinking about during that ‘Eye for a Player’ period?
