Vasilis Barkas set for Celtic departure in January, claims journalist

Vasilis Barkas looks set to make his Celtic exit, according to Greek journalist Giannis Chorianopoulos. The 27-year-old has appeared just once this season after dropping a clanger against FC Midtjylland in the Champions League Qualifiers, paving the way for Joe Hart to become the club’s number one.

The Editor in Chief at Sportime newspaper and Sportime.gr has been accurate on his reporting of the Vasilis Barkas move to Celtic and now he has taken to Twitter to update supporters to say that the goalie will likely either leave on loan or on a permanent transfer.

Barkas was not even included in the Celtic matchday squads with Scott Bain deputising for Hart and Conor Hazard joining in during the warmups.

The Celtic goalkeeper was ousted from the team on multiple occasions last season since joining from AEK Athens in a £5m deal back in August 2020. However, under Neil Lennon it was clear that he had failed to settle and as a result struggled behind a makeshift defence, resulting in the Greek goalie being made a scapegoat for the poor results. He wasn’t a great acquisition despite an apparent pedigree coming as an International.

This season though, Barkas appeared to become the No.1 under new boss Ange Postecoglou. The mistake against Midtjylland and then a number of goalkeeping fumbles in the defeat to West Ham resulted in Scott Bain taking the gloves for The Champions League exit in Denmark.

Now, with Joe Hart between the sticks for Postecoglou, Barkas will need to seek a loan move elsewhere if he is to achieve a call-up to the Greek National Team. It was expected that the goalie would leave the club in a loan deal but the window closed before anything could be agreed for the goalie.

It would be best for all parties if Celtic could cut their losses with Barkas and get him back playing football elsewhere.
