Vasilis Barkas set for Celtic start after Kennedy confirms Bain’s absence

Vasilis Barkas looks set to return to the Celtic team tomorrow as John Kennedy revealed that Scott Bain picked up an injury in the defeat at Ibrox. Barkas was signed for £4.5m from AEK Athens last summer but failed to make the desired impact. Now, Kennedy appears set to recall him to the Starting XI for the visit of Callum Davidson’s St Johnstone.

Speaking at the media conference today, Kennedy confirmed that Bain, who has been the No.1 for the latter part of the campaign, would not be risked meaning that another goalkeeper would be used.

“Scott Bain picked up a finger injury in the previous game against Rangers. We’re not taking any risks with that. There’s one or two others, again, who we won’t risk.

“But nothing major, we’re pretty much working with the same squad give or take one or two.”

Barkas hasn’t played since the 2-2 draw versus Livingston in January with Scott Bain coming back into the team as No.1. Barkas has played 20 games this season and has endured scathing criticisms from supporters and pundits but he has been unfortunate in the fact he has been playing in front of defences that are hastily strung together.

Barkas should be the player that is given the runout in the final two games of the season as the team begin planning for next year. His performances have not been stellar but not have those of Hazard or Bain. The club should be determining whether the Greek goalie has a future at Celtic or not.
