‘Very Decent’ – Joe Hart reaches out to young Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper

After a trophy laden debut season in a Celtic shirt Joe Hart has been off on his summer holidays sunning himself and singing songs about his club captain.

Yet as we all know the impression many of us – your writer included – had of Joe Hart as some sort of bigtime Charlie prior to joining Celtic were very much wide of the mark.

Hart has been a solid performer between the sticks for Celtic this season, but he’s also been crucial in fulfilling a leadership role behind the scenes and has clearly embraced the club in his short few months at Celtic so far.

And for a Shropshire lad – who started off his professional career with Shrewsbury Town – Hart clearly hasn’t forgotten his roots with the Shropshire Star reporting Joe Hart has taken the time out to give some advice to another young Shrewsbury goalkeeper Jaden Bevan now starting out on the same career path as Hart did.

“My mum texted Joe Hart and he replied to her because they know each other. He messaged me and we just talked about it all, he gave me some advice and sent me videos of him talking.

“He was really helpful. He gave me advice on what to do and how to handle stuff and it was just weird talking to someone of that level as if you’re mates; he was talking to me as if he actually cared when he didn’t have to talk to me at all, but he did.

“He’s where I want to be and doing what I want to be doing in life, so having a chat with him made that seem more reachable and it made him seem more human.”

75 caps for England and some media patter that was far from ‘decent’ gave an altogether different impression of what we actually got when Joe Hart arrived at Celtic.

The reality of the Celtic ‘keeper appears to be of a top professional and one who has retained his shot-stopping abilities but is also a far humbler man than many may have given him credit for prior to signing on at Celtic – and stories like this one about offering words of wisdom to a young goalkeeper following in his footsteps shows Joe Hart is a player with his feet on the ground alongside being one who hasn’t forgot where he started. Very ‘decent’ of you Joe!

As a Bellshill Bhoy I was taken to my first Celtic game in the summer of 1987. It was Billy McNeill’s return to Celtic Park as manager and Celtic lost 5-1 to Arsenal . I thought I was a jinx, I think my Grandfather might have thought the same. It was the finest gift anyone ever gave me when he walked me through Parkhead's gates.
