When Jonny Hayes left Celtic at the end of last season everybody thanked him for the winning goal at Ibrox back at the start of the campaign. As a Celtic fan growing up in Dublin, it must have been a dream come true for Jonny when the ball hit the back of the net to seal victory at the home of the enemy. Sadly, Covid-19 scuppered his chances at the club and he was shipped out to free up wages for players of higher priority. Nevertheless, that special day can never be taken away from him.
It’s hard to believe that a year has now elapsed since Celtic beat the new Rangers 2-0 at Ibrox, but it’s true. 1 September 2019, the Hoops went to Ibrox with a mentality that ensured we wouldn’t be beaten as we had been in Govan on our last visit. Right from kick off, Edouard blasted the ball out for a throw in near the host’s corner flag, putting them on the back foot immediately. It was something normally seen in rugby.
Edouard then made a bigger statement when he gave Celtic a first half lead with a cool nutmeg against Allan McGregor. The Bhoys controlled the game throughout and finally made sure of things in the closing minutes when Jonny Hayes went through on goal. The Irishman’s initial effort was saved but he tapped home the rebound to secure a comfortable and important 2-0 victory.
