Notoriously afraid of flying, Jimmy Johnstone got a taxi from Madrid to Benidorm with wife, Agnes, just hours after 135,000 people gave him a standing ovation at the Bernabeu!
The Lisbon Lions were full of characters and Johnstone was one such individual. He stole the show in Madrid and set up the winner by jinking past two defenders before slotting a beautiful pass between another two defenders for Lennox to score.
Bobby Lennox retells the tale of the taxi debacle in the video below and there are two earlier articles today on this match in 1967 which was possibly the most prestigious and important friendly in Celtic’s history and the player from the newly crowned Champions of Europe that the Spaniards in the crowd were all talking about was Celtic greatest ever player the one and only Jimmy Johnstone.
Here incidentally is a match ticket from the Bernabeu from this day in 1967, sent in to The Celtic Star courtesy of Kenny Mackin…
