Video: Chris Sutton rubbishes Kris Boyd’s Celtic comments live on air

Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton had a bit of a set two before the game today against St Johnstone up at Perth. Boyd argued that Celtic’s UEFA Champions League group stages misfits need time as many of them are young, although Sutton was having none of this, after having to endure the agony of watching the Hoops blow chances and then implode at the back.

The former Rangers and Kilmarnock striker made the contentious shout that Brendan Rodgers doesn’t need to overhaul this squad come the opening of the January transfer window and instead needs to give the latest batch of summer recruits time. It was a comment that irked the Celtic legend who has had to endure many weak European performances for years now just like the supporters of the club.

Taking Boyd to task on this assertion, he said in retort: “Let’s not make excuses for Celtic in the Champions League. They’ve had a few injuries but Jota missed a couple of games last season and he was, you could argue, the main player for them. So, that’s no excuse. We are seeing Copenhagen, a team you would put on par with Celtic in terms of finance, who are competing in the Champions League.

“Well look at the level of performance. Let’s not make this out as a great Lazio team, it’s a bang average Lazio team. Atletico Madrid have their strengths and Feyenoord. The point Kris [Boyd] makes about Celtic basically not needing to sign players in January was utterly ridiculous. I mean of course Celtic are going to sign players if Brendan Rodgers feels they are not at the level. They need to build again and that’s an admission actually that they got things wrong in the summer.”

Although there is definitely something in a what Boyd says to an extent (there’s a phrase you don’t hear often), there is still too much deadwood in that squad that has to be moved on. More quality needs sourced and the players who are nowhere near it right now need loan deals away like Liam Scales, Kris Ajer and Ryan Christie had to aid their development. The rest should be shown the door and made available for transfer if we can get anything for them.

About Author

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
