Nir Bitton spoke to the media after the 4-2 defeat in Milan and categorically denied that the Celtic players are not playing for the manager. It what was a clumsy media conference, with the journalists all talking over each other the Celtic midfielder come defender recognised the absolute necessity of a win over St Johnstone on Sunday to bring to an end a run of three successive defeats and just two wins in eleven matches.

Celtic exited the Europa League last week but the humiliating thrashings continued last night with another four goals conceded as the Celtic defence collapsed to yet another calamity. The look of John Kennedy slumped in his seat with his hands stuffed in his pocket was not a good one yet sort of summed up how the support are seeing the interest and the level of performance from the management and the players.

Bitton avoided giving the headline writers an easy shift by his diplomatic answers to questions about Neil Lennon’s future as Celtic manager saying that when the players aren’t performing at their best the manager usually ends up getting stick.

Whether Bitton is right or not regarding the dressing room being behind Lennon, the only way that they are going to help him is to win on Sunday and pretty much keep winning game after game then they can get back into the title race against an opponent that has been relentless so far.
