Video: Mikey Johnston’s impact instant for Ireland, unlucky not to score

Celtic winger Mikey Johnston has enjoyed an instant impact on his Ireland debut, assisting as Chiedozie Ogbene scored to give Stephen Kenny’s side the lead. The 23-year-old showed himself as being a direct, attacker going forward, driving into the box and firing a shot against the post for Ogbene to follow up.

Then, Johnston showed great footwork dancing through tackles before his effort was blocked.

Johnston is currently on loan at Vitoria Guimaraes but will return to the Scottish Champions at the end of the season when his spell in Portugal ends. Until then, the Celtic winger will be hoping to showcase to Ange Postecoglou that he has a future in Glasgow’s East End.

The wide attacker has made twenty-two appearances since the switch to Portugal and has scored three times as well as assisting three times. Movement on the Liel Abada front could offer an opening for Johnston and if he can continue to catch the eye with performances, Ange will certainly give him a chance.
