Video: On This Day, Lennon’s Celtic Demolish Rangers

Cast your mind back to 2011 when Neil Lennon’s Celtic and Walter Smith’s Rangers were locked in a tense battle for silverware which gripped the nation. It was Lennon’s first season in charge, having been appointed following an interim spell in charge as a result of Tony Mowbray being sacked.

Key players such as Aiden McGeady and Artur Boruc were sold so that Lennon could bring in his own guys like Beram Kayal, Joe Ledley, Emilio Izaguirre, Kris Commons, Fraser Forster, Charlie Mulgrew, Anthony Stokes and Gary Hooper – all of which would form the nucleus of what he was doing at Celtic alongside captain, Scott Brown.

Lennon promised to ‘bring back the thunder’ and he did with an incredible performance on this day in 2011.

The Celtic team were energetic, fit and strong as they clinically disposed of Smith’s Rangers to establish an eight point lead at the top of the SPL, albeit the visitors had two games in hand.

Two goals in the first half from Hooper sent Celtic on their way before Commons sealed the issue in the second half with a fine strike.

The first goal is a brilliant piece of football that shines through what Celtic do under Lennon, get the ball forward through passing, attacking movement.

Celtic would go on to lose the league that year, aided by a number of honest mistakes across the course of the season but this game would act as a marker for the club’s decade of dominance that would stretch up to the present day.
