Celtic won their second pre-season friendly in as many games yesterday, a confident 2-1 result over Charlton Athletic in Wales being the latest result. Manager Ange Postecoglou has used a variety of players to know his best XI – including much of the young Bhoys.
Adam Montgomery, 18, has been one of the standout players to come from Lennoxtown in recent times – with the full-back featuring heavily in the win over the Addicks yesterday. He was duly delighted, as seen in his interview with Celtic TV yesterday.
“Yeah, it was a great performance, it was good to get more minutes in the legs. First half I enjoyed playing left-wing, a bit further forward, and then second-half back to left back. It was a good run out for the boys and myself.”
Montgomery has proved he is a versatile player for The Hoops; and with a treacherous season ahead which can provide debuts to even the most unexpecting of players, it wouldn’t be far fetched to say that Montgomery could prove useful to Ange in an array of positions despite being the fruitful age of just 18.
When asked if he prefers left-back or a left-wing role, Montgomery said: “I enjoy both! I’d say my preference is probably left-back after playing it a bit more, but I can do either or. As I’ve said before, I was always a left-winger growing up, so I’ll always have that in my game and I can still play that position, but with the way the game is headed now, full-backs are becoming more attacking so I feel I can bring that further up the pitch.”

Liam Shaw played a number of positions in the match alongside his team-mate Montgomery, with the youngster admitting such adaptiveness can only bring good things. “It shows that you have got versatility and Liam can do a job wherever you put him. You need to have confidence and show for the ball; that’s why players like me and Liam are here.”
Confident words from a young man who has excelled on the pitch as of late – let’s hope he keeps it up; who knows, Adam Montgomery could be the next Kieran Tierney…
