Vorskla Poltava 0-1 Celtic – Agnew’s fantastic finish gives Celtic the advantage in UWCL tie

Celtic FC Women beat Vorskla Poltava 1-0 to take a one goal advantage into the second leg, which will be played at the Excelsior Stadium on Thursday 26 September…

It took the Ghirls just five minutes to open the scoring as Murphy Agnew was sent through on goal. The American made no mistake in finding the net with a fantastic finish to put her side ahead.

It could’ve been more as the Celts kept pushing to double their advantage but we were unlucky on a few occasions. Amy Gallacher was caught offside when she was knocked through on goal, and Lucy Ashworth-Clifford had a good delivery cleared by the Ukrainian champions.

Approaching the break and LAC had the chance to get her name on the scoresheet. Shannon McGregor sent a ball across to the winger and she struck but it went wide of the target.

In the second half, she had another go as she struck the post with 50 minutes gone. She also almost set up McGregor for a good finish but the goalkeeper did well to keep Celtic out.

In the closing stages, the Scottish champions did well to keep the ball and keep Vorskla at bay. Kit Loferski almost found the second with eight minutes left to play as she burst through on goal but her attempt was saved by the goalkeeper despite her best efforts.

But all that matters is that we have the advantage going into the second leg, as we saw out the 1-0 result in Airdrie.

Fantastic result but it could’ve been more. Hopefully, we can hold this for the second leg and maybe have some more goals to show come the end of it. A place in the group stages surely awaits our history makers, but they’ll have to put in a professional performance to ensure victory in the second clash.

Let’s get a big Celtic crowd along to Airdrie on Thursday night to get the Ghirls over the line and into the group stages.
