“We’ll lick our wounds then figure out what went wrong,” Caitlin Hayes

A clearly disappointed Caitlin Hayes spoke to Celtic TV last night at the Excelsior Stadium in Airdrie last night after Celtic FC Women were held to a shock 0-0 draw against Motherwell in the re-arranged SWPL1 fixture.

Fran Alonso, as we reported earlier today, was frustrated and disappointed with both the result and the performance and will be looking for an immediate reaction on Sunday afternoon when Partick Thistle are the visitors to Celtic home-ground in Airdrie.

The experienced 27 year old Celtic central defender echoed her manager’s sentiments after such a terrible shock result.

“Just a massive disappointment,” Hayes said. “I don’t think that we stuck to the game-plan. I don’t think that we turned up with the right focus or the right attitude. Overall it’s a big disappointment to drop two points.

“It’s not a loss but it feels like one. There’s an opportunity to learn, so we’ll go back and lick our wounds a little bit and we’ll figure out what went wrong and how to put it right with such a quick turnaround for Sunday.

“I guess it’s the only positive in that you’ll only ever draw if you don’t concede but it’s not what’s expected when you wear this shirt. You are expected to win and tonight we weren’t good enough so we’ll hold our hands up and go back reflect, recharge and be ready for Sunday,” Hayes added.

“There’s not a lot of time to keep your head down thinking about it, but what we will do is think about how to be better and with the guidance of our coaches we’ll hopefully stick better to the game-plan. We know we need to be better, so we’ll hold our hands up and we’ll go out on Sunday ready to fight and put things right.”
