“What Budget?” ominous words from the Celtic manager Neil Lennon

Neil Lennon has been talking about his ongoing transfer business ahead of this evening’s friendly in Paris against the French Champions and Champions League hopefuls PSG, as his search for another goalkeeper continues.  The Celtic manager also revealed that he is looking to strengthen in one or two other positions and confirmed that there has been no approaches made for any of his Celtic stars. And that includes Kris Ajer with Lennon going out if his way to shoot down the constant rumours of interest from AC Milan with the Celtic manager stressing that there is absolutely nothing in that story at all.

He did provide the usual summer warning that all Celtic Supporters have got used to, sadly. That warning is that if a big money bid comes in that meets or exceeds the club’s valuation of a player then that would be considered and no-one would be too surprised if it was accepted. That for instance could take shape this summer when maybe a club like Arsenal decided to offer £30million for Odsonne Edouard.

And as the Celtic talisman is the most valuable member of the current Celtic squad any transfer would leave a huge whole in the manager’s plans for Ten-in-a-Row and would clearly be regarded as a major let down by the support. You would have to assume that Neil Lennon is well aware that Edouard is likely to attract interest and he’s more than likely looking at his options in terms of summer recruits for another goalscorer. Here’s the worrying part of what Lenny was saying:

“It is difficult to say, particularly in this climate currently, that a player is not going anywhere, because everyone has a price. Ideally we don’t want to sell our best players and we will remain steadfast on that. But if an offer comes in then I’m sure the club will consider it and do the best thing possible for the club going forward.”

He added, as reported by Scottish Sun: “But it’s not just hard for me, it’s hard for all managers right now. It will be interesting to see how the market opens up. You just don’t know. The English Premier League is not finished yet but when they do they will be starting to look around.

“It might speed up before the new season starts but at the minute we have had no enquiries for any of our players. Nothing at all.”

And on all the talk of Milan bidding for Kris Ajer the Celtic manager was very clear as he closed that one down.

“There’s absolutely nothing in that at all. Nothing. He’s got a couple of years left on his contract and I want him here and the club wants him here.”

Asked if the Covid-19 crisis has had an impact on his transfer budget this summer, there was maybe a hint of frustration in his humorous response.

“What budget?” the Celtic manager replied.

“Listen, I’ve had no indication from Peter that the climate has changed. It’s business as usual as far as I am concerned. But I’m not close to anything just now. I’m spinning a few plates but there’s nothing concrete at the moment.

“There are a couple of positions that we are looking to strengthen. Goalkeeper is one of them and we are working on a number of options. Hopefully there may be something this week. We are working on a number of options for other positions, too.”
