Why Ange Postecoglou now stands alone among Scottish Premiership Managers

The dismissal of Callum Davidson came as somewhat of a surprise last week, despite St Johnstone being in dangers of being dragged into a relegation battle, it seemed a little harsh. Davidson is of course statistically the best manager in the Perth’s sides history, thanks to his domestic cup double success in season 2020/21.

The sacking of Davidson means that outwith Ange Postecoglou no manager in the top flight has led their club to a trophy. In fact Derek McInnes is the only men currently managing in the premier league who has led a Scottish side to trophy success. That was of course a league cup win with Aberdeen way back in 2014. Ronny Delia, who won the Scottish Premiership twice in 2015 and 2016 and the League Cup in 2015 with Celtic, is currently in work managing in Belgium at Standard Liège.

After the demise of Rangers FC it opened the door for many other clubs to challenge for major honours. Despite claims of armageddon, a few clubs thrived and celebrated some cup glory. In the past decade four different sides outside Celtic and newco Rangers have tasted league cup success, St Mirren in 2013, Aberdeen in 2014 Ross County in 2016 and St Johnstone in 2021.

St Johnstone also had Scottish Cup success in 2014 and 2021, with Inverness and Hibs successful in 2015 and 2016 respectively. theRangers of course having a solitary win in 2022.

Celtic of course won all the other cups in this period, including of course during the Quadruple Treble where eight cups in a row were won.

Staggeringly along with Callum Davidson Everyone of those managers are out of a job today. That list includes Danny Lennon (St Mirren), Jim McIntyre (Ross County), Tommy Wright, John Hughes (Inverness Caley Thistle), Alan Stubbs (Hibs) and Giovanni Van Bronckhorst (theRangers). Even Steven Gerrard once tipped as a future Liverpool and England manager is out of work despite leading newco Rangers to the first league title in their history.

The most successful managers in that time were of course Neil Lennon and Brendan Rodgers. Sweeping up every honour in that time on multiple occasions. Even two managers with that success and experience are currently out of a job presently showing just how ruthless the job of a football manager is.

Ange Postecoglou has so far won three major honours while at Celtic and that puts him out in front ahead of Derek McInnes with one and the rest of the current crop of Scottish Premiership managers – including Mick Beale – who have all won nothing.
