Why Boyata’s ‘bad day at the office’ for Belgium is good news for Celtic

IT wasn’t in the script and everything seemed to be going to plan. Belgium were two goals up and in cruise control. Dedryck Boyata, who in just over a month’s time is free to speak to any interested clubs about a pre-contract for the end of the season, was in the starting eleven and reveling in his chance to shine on the international shop window.

Then it all went horribly wrong as Switzerland scored 5 goals without reply and the Celtic central defender took much of the blame from pundits, fans and indeed himself. And any scouts watching are more likely to file under Bomb-scare than Buy – it was a bad night for Dedryck Boyata.

Every cloud they say has a silver lining and that 5-2 defeat might just swing the current contract discussions with Celtic in our favour. It certainly will have dampened the enthusiasm for any club looking at a big money move for the player in January.

Fingers crossed anyway. Poor Dedryck is in a bit of a state after it all. Here’s what he’s had to say to the media.

“I won’t be sleeping very well for many days now.

“At 2-0 up, it should have been a time for us to control the game – instead the opposite happened.

“Many of our players were below their best against Switzerland and I have to include myself in that.

“It wasn’t a lack of motivation and we didn’t underestimate them.

“We just had a very bad night defensively. It’s time for me to go back to basics and take it from there.

“After such a great World Cup, to come down to a level of performance like that wasn’t good enough and we will have to seriously analyse what went wrong.”

We had our own International woes this morning when the new Celtic fans forum Celtic Noise was hacked by an army of Chinese hackers. A few hours this morning wasted tidying up that and banning the hackers has meant a slower than usual start to the day on The Celtic Star.

Catching up now though…
