Willie Collum to referee the New Year Glasgow Derby

It has been reported tonight that Willie Collum will be the man in the middle for the Glasgow Derby at Celtic Park on 2 January. The annual New Year derby match falls at Paradise again this year and will give us an opportunity to cut the gap on our rivals with only four points in it at present.

Refereeing has been a widely debated subject this season, as Celtic have been on the receiving end of some extremely unfair officiating, regardless of what others might say to the contrary. The outcry of late when Celtic have gotten the benefit of the doubt has been laughable to be blunt about it. The furore of Kyogo’s tight goal against Hearts a couple of weeks back and the few seconds over in injury time we scored up in Dingwall has certainly ruffled some feathers.

Collum will be joined on the lines at Parkhead by David McGeachie and Daniel McFarlane, whilst Nick Walsh will be the fourth official. Of course, as we all know, Nick Walsh is an employee of the Ibrox entity currently so will have a vested interest in the outcome of the match.

The game will be Collum’s first since the 1-1 draw back in match at the same venue. Moi Elyonoussi was the scorer of the Celtic goal on that particular occasion against our fierce rivals.

Collum has experience of refereeing this fixture, with several clashes in the past throwing up contentious decisions. The notorious incident when he missed Kirk Broadfoot diving then awarded the now deceased Rangers FC a penalty is one of a number of questionable decisions the whistler has made during his tenure in this fixture over the years.

Let’s hope he has no surprises for us come 2 January!

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
