“Without that atmosphere you wouldn’t have people talking about it,” Ange Postecoglou on Glasgow Derby

Ange Postecoglou, speaking at today’s Media Conference ahead of tomorrow night’s vital cinch Premiership match against Aberdeen at Pittodrie looked back to last Wednesday and noted that the spectacle on the night as well as the game itself justified the decision to push back the game from 2 January – where it would have been played in front of just 500 fans – to 2 February where 60,000 Celtic supporters created a world class atmosphere that inspired his players and indeed himself.

Indeed reflecting on just how awesome an atmosphere was created last Wednesday night, you start to get a better appreciation of why theRangers were so keen to have the game played in front of just 500 fans.

A shower of Covid opportunists, so they are, yet to win anything in front of fans, last year they were running around clapping Ibrox blue seats…

“My point after the derby game is that we’ve gone through a period of time over the last 18 months to two years where, because of the circumstances the world’s been in, in terms of the pandemic, where we’ve almost separated the game from its supporters,”  the Celtic manager said today.

“And whilst at the beginning I think it was done for the right reasons, after a while it’s almost like we forgot that, really, the game without supporters is nothing because no-one wants to watch games in an empty stadium.

“That game the other night – obviously it was great for us and not great for (the)Rangers, I get that, but if that was in an empty stadium, you wouldn’t have had, without that atmosphere and that special connection, you wouldn’t have people talking about it, whether they’re Celtic supporters or not.

“And that was my point – that’s what football clubs are. They’re more than just sporting clubs and sometimes I think, particularly when l listen to politicians talk, or people in power, they don’t understand the investment people have in their football club, that sometimes their whole week’s mood is judged by how their team goes

“For some people, that’s hard to conceptualize, but that’s how much it means to some people. We bear that responsibility, I bear that responsibility, so I guess that’s where the essence of what I was trying to explain after the game comes from.”
