South Korea coach Hong Myung-bo has commended Celtic star Yang Hyun-jun following his return to the national team….
After a 13-month absence from national team duties, the Hoops winger has been recalled for South Korea’s World Cup clashes with Jordan and Oman.
Securing two victories will guarantee South Korea’s spot in next summer’s World Cup Finals in the USA, Canada, and Mexico, and manager Hong expressed admiration for the 22-year-old Celtic forward’s recent improvement in form.
He said: “I went to Scotland to visit Yang in January and at the time, his playing time was short, and I could tell that there were difficulties within the team. Since that meeting, he has shown many good performances with Celtic.”
“He has made a major impact in games even when he was only playing in them for a short period of time. I believe young Korean players should be the mainstay of our team moving forward.”
Yang has encountered strong competition for a starting spot at Celtic since arriving in the summer of 2023, with players like Jota, Daizen Maeda, and Nicolas Kühn all ahead of him in the pecking order.
Yang’s call-up is well deserved, as he has been in outstanding form for Celtic over the past month, making key contributions with goals and assists off the bench, notably against St Mirren in Paisley. However, his path to this landmark individual achievement has been anything but easy.
