15 March, a day of extra time cup wins for Celtic

ON this day in 2009, as Jim Craig has written about this morning on The Celtic Star (read HERE) Celtic lifted the Scottish League Cup for the fourteenth time when they beat Rangers 2-0 at Hampden after extra time.

Celtic were the better team throughout the ninety minutes but could not force a winner, but then Darren O’Dea scored with a header in the first minute of extra time from a Shunsuke Nakamura free-kick before Aiden McGeady sealed it with a penalty at the end. The celebrations were long and joyous.

Other GOOD days for Celtic on 15 MARCH were 1919 when Celtic beat Albion Rovers 3-1 at Parkhead in the Victory Cup with goals from Patsy Gallagher, Andy McAtee and Jimmy McColl, 1922 when Patsy Gallagher scored the two goals that beat Motherwell at Parkhead, 1961 when a John Clark goal in extra time was enough to beat Hibs at Easter Road in the Scottish Cup Quarter Final replay and 1969 when, in a tight game against Partick Thistle at Parkhead, John Hughes scored the only goal.

A BAD 15 March was 1998 when Celtic took a 1-0 lead against Dundee United at Parkhead through Simon Donnelly and looked well on top, but then allowed Dundee United to equalize in the second half.
