Five memorable Celtic moments, with a nod to the late Celtic Historian and Celtic Star legend David Potter, on this day starting in 1919…
ONE – SATURDAY 1st FEBRUARY 1919 – Glasgow is on alert following the previous day’s riots in George Square for which troops had to be mobilised, although not deployed, to disperse left wing riots demanding a 40 hour week and a settlement of the rent strike. Police are barracked and slow-handclapped at Parkhead by the 25,000 crowd where Celtic beat Kilmarnock 2-1 with goals from Adam McLean and Andy McAtee, but it is the inside forward play of Patsy Gallacher and Jimmy McMenemy that really catches the eye.
TWO – SATURDAY 1st FEBRUARY 1958 – A truly astonishing Scottish Cup tie today at Broomfield sees Celtic 4-0 up soon after half time with goals from Bobby Collins, Willie Fernie and two from Alec Byrne and looking all set for the next round, but then Airdrie fight back, and Celtic spend the last 10 minutes clinging on desperately to a 4-3 lead. In spite of the rainy conditions, the crowd is a huge one for the small ground and in one corner of the ground is swaying dangerously.
THREE – SUNDAY 1st FEBRUARY 1987 – Celtic’s infuriating habit of throwing away a lead re-asserts itself on a hard pitch at Pittodrie in a televised Scottish Cup tie. The team are two goals up from Brian McClair and Alan McInally and looking good for their lead, but defensive errors allow Aberdeen back into the game and Celtic have to settle for a 2-2 draw before a 23,000 crowd on a bright but frosty day at Pittodrie.
FOUR – WEDNESDAY 1st FEBRUARY 2006 –
A Shaun Maloney shot after a pass from an indirect free-kick is enough to put Celtic into the final of the Scottish League Cup at the end of a hard fought semi-final against Motherwell at Hampden before 22,595 fans. Earlier Maciej Zurawski had scored for Celtic to equalise Richie Foran’s strike for Motherwell. Celtic will now play Dunfermline Athletic in the final.

FIVE – SUNDAY 1st FEBRUARY 2015 – Celtic play the new Rangers today for the first time at Hampden in the Scottish League Cup semi-final and win without a great deal of bother as Leigh Griffiths and Kris Commons score the goals in a rather easy win. Celtic are now still in four competitions in Manager Ronny Deila’s first year.
