2006 Photo Special – Celtic and Lisbon Lions at Estadio Nacional

Celtic slumped in Lisbon as Benfica got revenge for their 3-0 defeat in Glasgow a fortnight before.

Gary Caldwell endured a nightmare. Not all his fault to be fair, and Pearson starting was not a great touch and the midfield was a sieve which made the defence have to work too hard. Benfica had a free run down our left side and we were caned by Benfica for this.

Anyhow, not a great return for the Celts but the Lisbon Lions came onto the pitch at half time as it was another umpteenth anniversary for them, but this time we were all in Lisbon.

I was on that trip and the highlight was visiting the Estadio Nacional but I we went later in the day – it had been a long night – and missed the Lions returning to the scene of their greatest triumph.

Tonight Jim Greenan has some stunning photographs of what happened that day. Sit back and enjoy!

On 1 November 2006 while in Lisbon I got told on the QT that the Celtic squad would train in the Estadio Nacional the next morning at 10.00am. We were the first in the stadium that morning, I managed to catch Gordon (Strachan) lead his squad up that tunnel, I’ve a few photos to follow…

I also knew the time the Lisbon Lions were coming in their entrance, I think quite apt that Stevie Chalmers lead them on to the park.

That guy couldn’t get rid of the beer fast enough. We then found a bar at the dressing room area.

Doing my best Cesar with the cup near the dressing room area in the Estadio Nacional.

I also let in a penalty or two but what a day it was, until we went to the game that night.
