A tale of two injuries: Jullien returns but Johnston forced off

Celtic overcame Raith Rovers on a rainy day in Glasgow’s East End. Despite an early lead through Liam Scales, the visitors from Kirkcaldy were able to stay in the game until the final third when the substitution of Jota allowed Celtic to comfortably book their place in the next round. Jota assisted Giorgos Giakoumakis for the Celtic second, Maeda made it three before Nir Bitton finished off the scoring.

For Celtic though, it was a tale of two injuries. The first was Mikey Johnston, who made a rare start against the Championship side and the second was the end to Christopher Jullien’s injury purgatory.

Johnston has struggled for game team this season due to a recurring calf issue but the manager decided to start him ahead of Liel Abada and Jota as he looked to prove himself. Unfortunately, Johnston appeared to be struggling and was forced from the field with an injury. He made his way down the tunnel with the Celtic medical staff and he looked distraught at yet another injury hampering him.

The 22-year-old has a deal until 2025 but injuries and the performances of ours appear to suggest that a run in the first team are unlikely. Perhaps a loan deal would suit both parties as it currently looks as if the player will be unable to get the necessary minutes to keep fit and impress.

Meanwhile, Christopher Jullien ended a 14 month injury spell with an appearance this evening. The French defender replaced Cameron Carter-Vickers and was able to play at least 15 minutes of football. The defender received a rousing reception as he returned to the field of play and his first touch was cheered enthusiastically by the support. Jullien has missed a huge chunk of football And he has had to be very patient with his comeback. The manager has been keen to get him back onto the pitch and up to speed with his teammates.
