Abada £10m Celtic exit update – Relegation threatened Southampton ready to bid

The Liel Abada £10m exit story seems to be gathering pace. After one or two interventions from Israel, from their national coach and the former President of Abada’s former club Maccabi Petah Tikva, the Daily Mail has this morning provided an update on Abada’s stance on a possible contract extension at Celtic and has signalled that the Scottish Champions are now looking at moving the player on should their valuation be met by one of the potential suitors from the English Premier League.

Stephen McGowan at the Daily Mail provides the update today on the already known about interest from Southampton in the 21 year-old Israeli wing and the Scottish Daily Mail sportswriter believes that the Saints are preparing a £10m summer bid for the player.

Yesterday Liel Abada’s former president at Maccabi Petah Tikva stated that Abada could have left in the January transfer window but wanted to stay at Celtic until the end of the season, presumably as there appears to be a good chance that there could be a treble chance this season for Ange Postecoglou’s side. Or maybe Abada was simply hedging his bets as Southampton attempt to avoid relegation from the Premier League. The Saints are currently bottom of the Premier League so it’s not looking great for them at this stage, is it?

And as was shown in the January window with the transfers of both Josip Juranovic and Giorgos Giakoumakis, the Celtic manager is not going to retain players who want a move and that will happen provided Celtic’s transfer expectations are met. Both those players are quite a bit older in football terms that Abada who at 21 is clearly going to attract a premium price and a healthy profit of the £3.5m Celtic invested to bring him to Glasgow in the summer of 2021.

Southampton have been shrewd and successful shoppers in their East End of Glasgow bargain hunting picking up some real gems in the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Victor Wanyama, Fraser Forster and most recently Stuart Armstrong. Whether Liel Abada joins this list could come down to whether Southampton can avoid the drop.

Whatever happens though it seems likely that Abada will be moved on in the summer. He is a player with bags of potential but as Niall J noted yesterday on The Celtic Star he is far from the finished article but will be fondly remembered for his skelping exploits and several other key goals on the way to the title last year most notably that late winning against Dundee United at Celtic Park at the end of January last year that gave us the chance to beat theRangers on 2 February to go to the top of the league, where we have been ever since.
