Aberdeen confirm positive COVID-19 test nine days before Celtic clash

ABERDEEN have confirmed that one of their players have tested positive for COVID-19, nine days before they travel to Glasgow to face Celtic. Derek McInnes’ side were beaten at Pittodrie on Saturday by Rangers and were due to face St Johnstone on Saturday. The game is still planned to go ahead; however after the Granite City was placed into localised lockdown, Aberdeen cancelled training when it was apparent that one of the playing squad had been infected.

The BBC confirmed that the Pittodrie side had one positive case from their club testing after the weekend. The unknown player will be forced to quarantine whilst the rest of the squad are assessed to see if they have contracted the virus.

Saturday night saw a spread of the disease which has resulted in a rise of 79 cases. Although due to the track and trace utilised by the Scottish Government as well as the requirements of players to remain in a sporting bubble, it appears that the match will still take place even after this one case.

Celtic are due to play Aberdeen next weekend but this news could lead to a postponement should the Dons suffer greater infections after the weekend. The Scottish Government are insisting that the game will go ahead and should the game versus St Johnstone go ahead, the game against Neil Lennon’s side is likely to go ahead.

It is another timely reminder that the virus hasn’t gone away and that players need to be vigilant against the risks that pubs and restaurants pose.
