Aberdeen star, previously linked with Celtic, to miss league opener at Paradise

Aberdeen’s Connor Barron will miss the Premiership opener against Celtic next weekend after picking up a knock in a pre-season friendly. Jim Goodwin had been hoping to play the Scotland U21 Internationalist as they kick off their campaign at the home of the Champions next Sunday.

However, as reported by The Record, the game will come too soon for Barron after he picked up a slight injury in a bounce match. However, he did say that Jack McKenzie would be able to play next weekend.

“Barron played a part of a friendly match for us behind closed doors on Saturday and tweaked the inside of his knee again.

“It’s nothing major, there’s no alarm bells ringing but it is a tweak in the medial ligament which we hoped would be a couple of weeks but could potentially be another couple of weeks which is a bit disappointing.

“The Celtic game might just come too soon for him. McKenzie I’d like to think will be back in after the game against Raith.”

The 19-year-old enjoyed a breakthrough last season and is expected to kick on under Goodwin as he attempts to mastermind a resurgence in the North East after an extremely disappointing campaign last season.

Celtic were contemplating a move for Barron earlier in the window but he appears to have settled on remaining in Aberdeen for the time being. It will be interesting to see how he gets on once he has returned from injury and whether Celtic revisit their rumoured interest.

Another player that Goodwin will be unable to call upon is Liam Scales as the player cannot feature against his parent club. This will be a blow to Aberdeen but also the player as he would likely relish the opportunity to show Ange Postecoglou & the supporters what he can do.
