Opinion: Celtic unlikely to be considering move for Tottenham defender

Celtic will not be signing Japhet Tanganga from Tottenham Hotspur this summer. Reports from Italy have listed Celtic as considering a move for the English central defender, who can also play at right-back, as Antonio Conte looks to streamline his squad after a busy summer. However, it is extremely unlikely that Celtic will be considering a move for Tanganga.

Spurs are said to want €30m for the player, something that is simply impossible for the Scottish Champions. Milan are negotiating with the player’s agents in Italy, something that suggests a deal is forthcoming. Other Premier League sides have been touted with being interested in Tanganga but the suggestion Celtic are considering him seems far-fetched given the cost involved and defensive options currently available to the manager.

Celtic have already dealt with Spurs this transfer window, securing Cameron Carter-Vickers on a permanent deal, which could rise to £9m with add-ons. The USA International central defender spent last season on loan and struck up a reliable partnership with Carl Starfelt at the back. When the Swede returns, Ange will have his preferred pairing back.

Moritz Jenz arrived from Lorient earlier this week as an option at the back. The former Fulham Academy starlet joins on a season-long loan with an option to buy, should he impress. The German will offer depth at centre back and compete with Stephen Welsh to act as Ange’s next option should either of his preferred two be unavailable.

Christopher Jullien’s future is up in the air. The former Toulouse defender, who arrived for £7m in 2019, appears to be out of the manager’s plans albeit he has featured in pre-season. The arrival of Jenz suggests that he will receive limited game time and this may prompt him to leave. However, as it stands, he is a Celtic player so any suggestion that the club are looking at signing another defender, who would want to command a certain amount of minutes seems fanciful.
