‘Another player developed in Scotland’, Chris Sutton salutes ex-Celt Moussa Dembele after Champions League heroics

CHRIS SUTTON has saluted Moussa Dembele after the Frenchman’s double against Manchester City propelled Lyon into the last four. Sutton praised Dembele as ‘another player developed in Scotland’, a dig at those that regard the Scottish league as a back water.

For a bargain £20m, Dembele left Celtic for the Ligue 1 side after a falling out with Brendan Rodgers. This meant that a number of top Premier League sides missed out on top striker at a snip.

In the 9IAR celebrations earlier this year, Dembele called Celtic ‘the greatest club in the world’. Dembele was a fan favourite instantly with a hat-trick against Rangers at Celtic Park. He scored 51 goals in 94 appearances across the two seasons, winning six trophies during his trophy-laden spell in Glasgow.

The performance in Lisbon will have cheered up those in the Celtic boardroom that worry about the balance sheet after forking out for Ajeti and Barkas. Lyon need to win the Champions League in order to play European football next year but may be forced to sell their best players.

Celtic are believed to have a 15% sell-on fee for Dembele, which would rake in an astonishing £6m as it would be taken off of Lyon’s profit of the deal – which would be £40m.

A potential £6m windfall would be perfect for Celtic at the moment given the strain that COVID-19 has put on Scottish football. It also would allow the club to position themselves better when the inevitable interest for our star players come.

Here are the highlights from Moussa latest big night against Manchester City…
