Aston Villa’s degrading £7m link with Celtic’s player of the year

Aston Villa are reportedly lining up a deal for Celtic’s David Turnbull. The 21-year-old was recently called up to Steve Clarke 26-man team for the forthcoming Euros. With Ross Barkley’s loan deal from Chelsea expiring and Jack Grealish attracting interest from top clubs in England, The Premier League side are said to be eyeing up Turnbull.

According to The Scottish Sun, Dean Smith’s club are looking to bolster their options ahead of the new season and one name that has been suggested is Turnbull. The fee being discussed is £7m, representing a quick profit for the club but in all honesty, Turnbull is one of the players that should be kept ahead of the new season to be built around.

Turnbull was named the PFA Scotland Young Player of the Year but also won both the Celtic Player of the Year and Celtic Young Player of the Year awards in the club’s POTY awards last week. The attacking scored ten and assisted eight this year proving to be one of the brighter sparks in an otherwise bleak campaign.

The £3m summer signing from Motherwell has been another player this season that has stood out after forcing his way into the first team. His flair, pace and ability to spot a pass have resulted in the midfielder being one of the first names on the Celtic team sheet.

Any move should be rejected out of hand until a new manager is in the door and able to carry out their own evaluation of the players in the squad. We are likely to see an enormous exodus this summer but the last thing we should be doing is selling our best and brightest youngsters.
