On This Day, cheeky Celtic win to deny Graeme Souness’ Rangers a Treble

Celtic won the 1989 Scottish Cup Final by beating Rangers 1-0 thanks to a goal by Joe Miller. With Souness’ Rangers chasing a Treble, Celtic knew that they would need a strong performance to prevent such a fate. Rangers were the favourites arriving at Hampden but it was Joe Miller that turned the Final towards Paradise after 42 minutes.

Miller found the ball break to him fortunately in the area after Peter Grant tried to cross the ball towards the makeshift centre forward. A header, a slip and an opportunity presented itself to the winger and he made no mistake. Celtic would win the trophy through a spirited and dogged display but it would be the last until 1995 as Rangers’ financial doping ramped up many a gear.
