BBC Scotland to show “Proper” Invincibles as their final Scottish Cup Classic

I owe BBC Scotland a ‘proper’ apology! Here I was stating confidently a few days ago that Friday night would see Dundee United v St Johnstone of 2014, when they embarrass me (but in a pleasant way) by putting on Celtic v Aberdeen of 2017!

And they have turned up a good one. I still yearn for 1965, but 2017 is high up there as well in that it completed the first of our quadruple trebles. It was a game played on a very hot and “close” day with thunderstorms going on all around Glasgow. I am told that there was actually one going on at the very time that Tom Rogic scored the winner – but no-one noticed! (I did – Ed). The sheer eruption of joy was its own thunderstorm! It was a classic Celtic Scottish Cup final moment.

But there were better things than the weather. It was actually a very good game which Aberdeen have every reason to feel sore about – not because of any bad refereeing decisions, (the game was very well refereed, believe it or not!) but because of sheer bad luck and poor finishing. The Dons had several chances to finish things off (but so had Celtic!) before our very own Wizard of Oz did the job. And how I hated that Jonny Hayes when he scored their first goal!

It was a great day for our “Proper Invincibles”, but as always with Celtic, tinged with sadness. As we left the ground that day (the rain had temporarily stopped but no-one cared anyway) we were singing about Brendan Rodgers being here for Ten in a Row. It is a sad and poignant memory, yet if one of these two things had happened, the other would have as well.

Never mind, Enjoy Friday night. BBC Scotland 10.30 pm. And analyse the pundits! Who do they really support? Never mind any pious claims about neutrality! Who do these ladies really love? I have my suspicions. In fact, I know.

And you can read all about a Proper Invincible season in Matt Corr’s wonderful book, which you can order a signed copy below.
