Behind the Scenes from Celtic’s team photo, noticeable absence

Celtic released their team photo for the 2023/24 season this afternoon. Following this, the Scottish Champions released the footage that took supporters behind the scenes at Lennoxtown as the squad were captured, alongside their spoils from last season – the league, The Scottish Cup and the League Cup.

Check out the club’s BTS footage below:

Brendan Rodgers returned to the club in the summer after Ange Postecoglou left for Tottenham Hotspur and the Celtic manager was beaming as he sat in front of his squad. There were a couple of youth players – Daniel Kelly and Rocco Vata included but there was one noticeable absence.

Celtic’s James McCarthy was nowhere to be seen. The 32-year-old is still on the club’s website and, as far as we are aware, is still employed by the club but was not included in the team photo, further supporting the fact that his Celtic career appears to be at an end.

McCarthy arrived at Celtic as a free agent from Crystal Palace in 2021. The player signed a four-year deal, which raised eyebrows; however, he was coming in during a period of upheaval at the club and it was believed that he could potentially step into the shoes of Scott Brown. As it transpired, McCarthy found it challenging to get going. He contracted COVID-19, found himself injured and then found himself out of favour. While Callum McGregor was out, he enjoyed a brief spell in the team but always looked like he was getting up to speed. Two years later and twenty-seven appearances later, it would be in everyone’s interests if the player were to be moved on.
