Belgium ends League and names Club Brugge Champions

BELGIUM have become the first European nation to make a decision regarding their league, by declaring the current standings final. Club Brugge, who were 15 points clear of Gent, have been named as Champions.

Despite having 11 games remaining, league officials have decided that they must make a decision to clear up the confusion surrounding the conclusion of the 2019/20 campaign.

Stan Collymore summarises the situation regarding their ‘split’ and how the league was very much all to play for, despite the lead that Brugge enjoy.

Relegation meanwhile is yet to be decided as it appears to be very close down the bottom with just 2 points separating the bottom two. There are proposals to restructure the Belgian league with no relegations and two teams from the second division being promoted.

This could be the first of many declarations across Europe as the Coronavirus Pandemic keeps society shutdown. Scottish football chiefs may be forced to follow suit in order to protect next season.

Celtic are currently 13 points clear and should the Scottish Football hierarchy follow suit with the Belgian FA, Neil Lennon’s side would win their 9th title in a row.
