Benkovic Update – Lennon and Rodgers Open to Celtic Return

Neil Lennon has suggested that Celtic could re-sign for Filip Benkovic, should the Leicester City defender be allowed to leave the Premier League club on loan.

Benkovic enjoyed a season long loan last year before returning to Leicester in the summer but has played just once – in a cup match.

Brendan Rodgers revealed that should he succeed in his plan to sign another central defender before the deadline then he will look to give Benkovic an opportunity to play games elsewhere.

“We’re hopeful that will be sooner rather than later, over the next few days if we can bring in a centre half then that will give him a chance to get out.

“He definitely needs the games and we’re hoping that will take place.”

Neil Lennon refused to rule out that he would be interested in signing the Croatian, given the unknown extent to the injuries to Kris Ajer and Nir Bitton.

As reported by the Sun, Lennon admired the impact that Benkovic made during his twelve months in Glasgow – despite only working with him for a short time.

“I only worked with Filip for a short time, but I know he had a good impact here last season.

“Hopefully, we’ll be looking to bring one or two in this week.”

Earlier this month, Neil Lennon’s agent, Martin Reilly was pictured with Benkovic at the League Cup match versus Aston Villa. This could be a coincidence but the majority of the Celtic support will be hoping that a deal is in the works to bring the 22-year-old back to Celtic.

With Derby County and Bristol City also linked with the Croatian, Brendan Rodgers could go some way to repairing his fractured reputation with Celtic by sending reinforcements north of the border. With Lennon speaking about adding quality, Benkovic falls into that category.
