Birthday Wishes to Celtic Legend and Lisbon Lion, John Clark

“In the heat of Lisbon, the fans came in their thousands, to see the Bhoys become Champions ’67”, so the song goes and today, we celebrate an icon of the team that made the impossible possible for us all. For today, we celebrate the birthday of Lisbon Lion, John Clark. John turns 82 on this day and he has given Celtic Football Club everything over the years.

It seems like John Clark has been an ever-present at the club no matter what age group you belong to, such is the service this man has given the Celtic Family throughout his time and association with the club we love and adore. A player, assistant manager, and kitman for some years now, he remains a constant for us all and a reminder of the greatness that has gone before.

As a player, he helped the club achieve countless League Championships, endless dosmetic cups, and participated in being the first British club to win the European Cup in 1967. John is also part of the only British team to win FIVE trophies in the same season in the footballing calendar, which was recorded the very same year we won the big cup in 1967.

It’s difficult to find the words that do justice for a man of this ilk and calibre and so anything that is written ultimately fails to do him justice. The biggest compliment we could pay this man is to say that to know of John Clark is to know Celtic. His commitment to the cause really has gone above and beyond what anyone would expect, and the continuity he brings at Celtic Park, ensures the halcyon days of yesteryear are passed on to new generations of Hoops fanatics.

His history is our history. It remains so to this day and will continue long in to the distance, when we are all long gone from this life. He’s a true custodian and ambassador for this thing of ours we call Celtic. We will be eternally grateful.

With all that said, Happy Birthday John Clark!

From everyone at The Celtic Star!

About Author

I'm a Garngad Bhoy through and through. My first ever Celtic game was a friendly against Italian side Parma at Celtic Park, in 2002. Currently a student of English Literature and Education at the University of Strathclyde for my sins. Favourite game would be a toss up between beating Manchester United with that Naka freekick, or the game against the Oldco when Hesselink scored in the dying seconds. I'm still convinced Cal Mac is wasted playing that far back.
